Every experience God gives us, every person He puts in our lives, is the perfect preparation for the future that only He can see.

Psalms 37 25-26
25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed.

James 1:12
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.

This is the purpose of pain for the redeemed: It is one of your Father's ways of speaking to you; it is the evidence of His limitless love, by which He would draw you farther from evil and closer to Him, the divine remedy which can cure you of pride and help you lean more trustingly on the Lord.

"Faith does not comfort you where you are, but challenges you to be where you should be. Faith breaks the peace between what is and what should be."

Daily Devotional from In Touch Ministries
John 20:24-31
I have a friend whose heart was broken when his son decided he no longer wanted to be married. The father prayed that God would reconcile that broken relationship, but soon the divorce was final. My friend felt as though the Lord had let him down.
After Christ's death, Thomas struggled with a similar issue. He had envisioned his Messiah ruling as King of the whole earth--but now Jesus was dead, and Thomas's hopes were buried with Him. Had he believed a lie? Why had his Lord not done what the biblical prophecies said He would do?
When the other disciples reported that the Lord had risen from the dead, Thomas refused to believe unless he could actually see Christ's wounds of crucifixion (John 20:25). Having been disappointed after putting faith in Jesus before, he hesitated to do so again without tangible proof.
Our trust in God can take a nosedive when expectations of what He will do are unfulfilled. Perhaps you can think of a time you asked the Lord for something and believed with all your heart that He would do it--but then He didn't. What are we to do when it looks as if God has failed us? Keep believing! Jesus said, "Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed" (v. 29).
Thomas's huge disappointment--Christ's death--ultimately led to the greatest hope for mankind. When we feel that the Lord has let us down, we need to realize that in His great wisdom, He is doing something even greater than we asked.

Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Revelation 3:10
In the 1995 film that dramatized the story of the near-disaster during the Apollo 13 mission, a member of NASA's Houston team said to Gene Kranz, mission commander, "This could be the worst disaster NASA's ever faced." Kranz replied, "With all due respect, sir, I believe this is going to be our finest hour." And it was.
We tend to think of victories as life's finest hours, but the opposite is often true. Trials and tribulations call forth faith, perseverance, prayer, and creativity in ways that victory never will. Fortunately, the Church will not be on earth during the seven years of the Great Tribulation to come. But that doesn't mean there won't be increased persecution and a need for perseverance leading up to that hour. Whether then, or in any kind of tribulation we experience, the Christian can have his finest hour by God's grace. The apostle Paul took pleasure in persecutions for Christ's sake, knowing that when he was weakest was when God's grace was strongest.
If you are experiencing trouble, ask God for the grace to make it your finest hour.
The weakness of man sets the stage for the display of God's strength. Janet Wise

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Romans 8:18
What if you were to win an all expense paid, first-class trip around the world, but while checking your baggage at the airport you stubbed your toe? Would you say, "I wish I had never won this trip! Look! I've stubbed my toe!"?
No. You'd say, "This momentary discomfort cannot compare to the enjoyment of the trip we're about to take."
The Bible says that all our earthly problems fall into that category. They aren't worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed when we get to heaven. Paul wrote, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all" (2 Corinthians 4:17 NIV).
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. Whatever our situation here on earth, we know that our eternal quality of life will be beyond anything we can imagine or think about. We're looking for the glory to be revealed, the eternal glory that far outweighs all the stubbed toes and broken hearts of earth.
When Christ calls me Home, I shall go with the gladness of a boy bounding away from school. Adoniram Judson, Missionary
